I haven’t been on too many adventures lately since it has been a mad scramble to get the classroom ready for the school year. Tomorrow is the first day of school! Eek! So today I’ll just write about the wonderful Elkhorn Slough, a coffee shop I absolutely love in Pacific Grove, and a fruit stand that sells 10 oranges for a dollar. Yeah, it may sound random, but I promise that it’ll all tie together.
About two years ago I got a guided kayaking tour around the Elkhorn Slough with Mark. The Elkhorn Slough is off Highway 1 on Moss Landing. It’s by Monterey, CA, and so you can hang out in Monterey after kayaking or vice versa! The Slough is a watershed inhabited by many creatures, but the most popular organisms are by far the sea otters! Check out the sea otters on the Sea Otter Cam! I couldn’t get any photos of them because they popped up beside my kayak unannounced and then disappeared. We weren’t allowed to kayak too close to them because we didn’t want them to become too trusting towards humans.
We did see plenty of sunbathing seals, though!
And some pelicans? I’m actually not too sure what they are.
We also kayaked through some ‘grass’. I wasn’t able to take too many photos for fear of dropping my phone into the water.
You also don’t need to take a tour in order to kayak through the slough. You can bring your own kayak if you have one or merely rent the kayak and stay out there for most of the day. After kayaking, you can hang around the slough, or head to Pacific Grove! On the way back from Pacific Grove there are a few fruit stands/produce ‘stores’ that sell cheap produce like 10 oranges for a dollar. Buy some juicy, sweet fruit and then keep driving to Pacific Grove.
Pacific Grove is one of my favorite places in the entire world. I love everything about that small little beach town: crisp blue oceans, briny sea air, and friendly people.
While walking around, you can even sit on the benches and enjoy the scenery.
The Bookworks is one of my favorite coffee shops. Their hot apple cider is perfect for any cold day. Grab a cup after kayaking and then walk along the beach, or bring a book an read it in their cozy shop.
Good bye, summer! Hope you all have a fantastic start to your week tomorrow, and pray for me that I get a class as awesome as the one I had last year. I’m so nervous. You’d think that I’d feel less nervous by now, but nope. Still jittery as always. I’ll go stare at the pictures of the ocean to calm myself down.
Fun fact: Looking at pictures of nature can relieve stress.
